who is Maria Montessori?

Dr. Maria Montessori (August 31, 1870 – May 6, 1952) was an Italian educator, scientist, physician, philosopher, feminist, and humanitarian, best known for developing the Montessori method of teaching young children. She introduced the method in Rome in 1907, and it has since spread throughout the world.

Her main focus was to develop each child’s potential. She did not believe that children are born as a clean slate onto which the adults in their environment pour all their knowledge; instead, she believed that every child is born with innate wisdom and it is our job as adults to unravel their truest self so that they become the best adult version of themselves.

what is the Montessori method?

Montessori classrooms are beautifully crafted environments designed to meet the needs of children in a specific age range. Dr. Maria Montessori discovered that experiential learning in this type of classroom led to a deeper understanding of language, mathematics, science, music, social interactions and much more.

Every material in a Montessori classroom supports an aspect of child development, creating a match between the child’s natural interests and the available activities. Children can learn through their own experience and at their own pace. They can respond at any moment to the natural curiosities that exist in all humans and build a solid foundation for life-long learning.

The child possesses an inner dynamic spirit which, given the appropriate environment, manifests itself in a desire to learn and adapt. The purpose of a Montessori environment is therefore twofold:

1

To help the individual to reach self-awareness and self-worth

2

To fully develop the individuals’ various potentialities
